Fokker F27 History
The Fokker F27 was developed in the 1950's as a 32 seat aircraft known as the P.275. It has the distinction of being ordered in greater numbers of any western built Turbo Prop airliner and its military derivatives with a total of 786 models built. Production ceased in 1986.
The first prototype made its first flight on 24 November 1955 and the larger prototype that was more representative of the production model made its first flight in January 1957. At this stage, Fokker had already signed an agreement with the American aerospace manufacturer, Fairchild, to build the F27's under licence and later, the stretched version FH-227.
Developments of the F27 were the MK200/F27a which had more powerful engines, the MK300/F27b, the MK400 Combiplane including the MK400M Troopship Tactical Transport. The stretched (1.5metres) MK500 took the passenger capacity to 54 and was also the basis of the MK600 quick change freight/pax aircraft.

Fairchild Built F27's
In 1956, Fokker signed a licensing deal with the US aircraft manufacturer Fairchild for the latter to construct the F27 in the USA. The first U.S.-built aircraft flew on April 12, 1958. Fairchild also independently developed a stretched version, called the FH-227. Most sales by Fairchild were made in the North American market.
At the end of the Fokker F27’s production in 1987, 793 units had been built (including 207 in the USA by Fairchild), which makes it the most successful western European civil turboprop airliner.
Many aircraft have been modified from passenger service to cargo or express-package freighter roles and remain in service in 2009.
